The Innovation Cycle
"The Idea Management Process"

New Ideas
New Ideas come from everywhere in the organization. Everybody is invited to share his or her Ideas. All Ideas should be send to the Idea Manager:Michel Aartsen. who will make sure ideas don't get lost and that they get the proper attention to evaluatie possible opportunities. For this first check the Idea Evaluaiton Form will be used.

Ideas in fluation phase
(from idea to evaluation)
In this short question and answering scheme a stepwise explanation is give how to get to the fluation phase.

What is an idea?
It can be anything, but to make the playing field a little bit smaller you should think of technical /marketing possibilites in general.

Where does the idea live?
At the beginning in the idea owner's mind.

How to make an idea explicit so that others can join it?
Writing it down on paper (or electronically) and sending it to the idea manager is only the start ofthe joint idea! It is a necessary step to make the following basic notes on the idea:
  • Describtion of the idea (problem/solution, usage/market, techniques)

  • Questions that come into the mind reading the problem

  • What is the fluation phase?
At the fluation phase an interaction starts between the idea owner and the idea manager to sharpen the idea and have a more or less pre-study of the idea. This consists of:
  • Using the network of the idea owner and idea manager to collect more information on the idea and some questions

  • A quick web search of what is known about the idea (technique, market, material, etc.)

  • This will take one or two interactions between the idea owner and the idea manager until enough information is gathered to make the evaluation.

    Idea Evaluation Form
After the fluation phase the idea is send out to the evaluation team which consists of the idea owner, LAD's, Technical ATI and R&D. The evaluation is based on six criteria:

1 - does it fit Pipelife strategy
2 - do we have the necessary technical know-how (R&D)
3 - do we have the marketing and sales ability
4 - is it in line with our existing production technologiy and equipment
5 - how low or how high are the estimated expenditures
6 - does this idea bring real innovation or is it just a me-too product

After filling in the yellow fields in this form the Idea ranking is calculated. These results are published on Intranet (only internal). Based on our current experience we know now that Ideas with a score above 60% are interesting enough to start a quick feasibility study. In that case the Idea Manager will study this idea and discuss it with relevant specialists to get a better feeling of the technical and commercial feasibility of the Idea. When everything looks promising a project proposal will be made. Such a proposal combines a planning, a budget, and a project team and is offered to the Steering Committee (Management Committe, Head of Corporate Marketing, R&D Manager) for approval.

    Projects

After a proposal is approved by the Steering Committee the official project starts. The respective PPM or a colleague from the interested Pipelife Company manages the project.

In case you have an interesting and innovative idea, please complete our Idea Box form. The Pipelife Innovation Team will evaluate every idea posted and will honor your effort with a little gift. Every idea that passes the evaluation process will be awarded and its owner (you?!) will be contacted accordingly.
